The time is 1959 and the place is the Welton academy in Vermont. Starting up, the image is ab pop a group of oppressed- iodin can suppose- impressionable unripe boys who lead a dull life governed by the Orthodox views of older adults. But theres something at work that turns what could have been a forgettable, droll piece of saccharine storytelling into a classic. The poetry burden is an interesting and unexpected one. Writer Tom Schulman and director dick Weir have no confusion that the idea is a little corny: I mean who gets a kid up in front of a class, covers their eyes and asks them to free cuss until they come up with a bit of poetry? Sounds pathetic! Nonetheless, it is successful and this is one of the most powerful, overwhelming and strange scenes in the whole film!
