When first observing the limits of time, Shakespeare compares it with a lenify: fall(a). His dismal view of fall is shown as he refers to scandalmongering leaves, or none, or few do hang (2), causing the reader to picture a scarce tree late losing all of its leaves. As it loses leaves, Shakespeare is using a metaphor to confront the coming of death. Autumn is a long period of time, experiencing a lot of changes throughout one season. His hindrance on the sulky transformations that are coming about is causing him to feel that career is slowly fading. Shakespeare is dwelling on the past by retention how the sweet birds sang (4). In essence, Shakespeare is wasting valuable time as he notices aspects in life transform minute of arc by bit and is gradually losing sense of the present.
