The blood-red Letter
The growth of Hester throughout The Scarlet Letter was dramatic and varied greatly. In the beginning of the obtain she was feeling ashamed, isolated, and shunned by the townspeople. To her, the A stood for more than adultery, it stood for ashamed. She was creation absorbed by the judgment of others; the lock was a simple ruby earn. The villagers had a harsh start with their judgment on Hester. They looked dump on her from the beginning, they were especially judgmental when she was in the marketplace being tormented and emotionally tortured.
As time went by their police van softened to her and they became more accepting and familiar with her. Hester Prynne for her frailty; nay, more, they had begun to look upon the scarlet letter as a token, not of that iodine sin, for which she had borne so long and dreary a penance, but of her many good deeds and since.(pg. 193) Eventually the villagers looked past the scarlet letter and saw Hester for the good deeds she had done instead of the sin that she had committed. They saw her for helping the poor and her extraordinary talent in embroidering for the rich, poor, dead, and alive. To them, the scarlet letter had evolved to mean acceptance.
