As humans we try find our hindquarters in life, our purpose, the reason for our existence. We try to use religion as a driver to guide us through our beat on earth, but it makes us wonder what are we doing hither or if we really matter. Would anything change if we were suddenly gone? mayhap to our loved ones and the ones close to us, but in the grand contrivance of things we are but less than a foot note. The story opens with four men who have no label but simply their tittles as crew members; The Captain, the oiler, the cook, and the correspondent, who are marooned in a small boat in the ocean. compensite from the start crane shows how little nature cares for their tragedy The birds sat comfortably in groups, and they were envied by some in the dingy, for the pettishness of the sea was no more to them than it was to a covey of prairie chickens a thousand miles inland.() Despite their situation, nature; the birds, the sea, it all goes on no matter what might happen to the sailors. Throughout the story the men reckon to not keep track of their purlieu or where they are on a daytime to day basis. This feeling that the men are all having causes them to feel illogical from nature. The men start to feel angry towards nature and to them it seems that nature has the same feeling towards them. The men think that all odds are against them in their journey to save themselves.
