After reading the article written by Zora Neal Hurston entitled, I c all in all up the very day that I became colored reminds me of a crabbed moment in my life when I was singled push through because of who I was. Singled out in this context is defined as, tough differently on the basis of my race.

Growing up in the early 60s our country experienced a good deal racial turmoil. On September 15, 1963 at 10:25 am four young African American girls were killed in whats been reported as a racially motivated bombing at the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. On July 2, 1964, then President Lyndon B Johnson signed into practice of law the, 1964 Civil Rights Act of 1964 and closer to home with racial overtones the 1966 NCAA basketball game impale Championship with the University of Kentucky against Texas Western (Now University of Texas El Paso). The game marked the University of Kentucky, a basketball power with five Caucasians starting against Texas Western, an unknown instill starting five African Americans. Texas Western won the game defeating the University of Kentucky with a score of 72 to 65. This game changed the landscape of college basketball as we know it.

I was fortunate to be reared by my Grandmother who prepared me for school prior to attending. At the school I attended I dont remember anyone of another race than mine including the Administration, Teachers and Staff. So needless to suppose I felt very comfortable and excelled in all phases of my learning. Two things stick out in my mind during my start grade experience; the first was the favor I accepted from my Teacher for a project I completed involving victorious each letter of the alphabet, putting it in a destine and drawing a picture a picture of that particular letter.
