The Red badge of Courage is a novel that goes in to the mind and life of a teenage boy, and scrutinizes his actions during the civilized War. The teenage boy, hydrogen Fleming, is clouded by his fantasies of becoming a warfare hero and receiving the glory. Henry enters the Civil War as boy, but through a series of battles and events his character evolves and matures. His façade quickly fades away in his journey through war and interactions with others. Out of the many transformations Henry goes through, he changes the most from neutering his childish ways to flummox more of an adult. Henry has the relay transmitter role in this novel as he progresses, and matures transforming into a round character full of change. In the Red Badge of Courage, Stephen Crane examines how peer evaluation and their perception of reputation do an individual to act variously and formulate them into a different person. Also through this process, Crane parallels Henrys centralize of his perception with his maturing in war and becoming a man.
Henry can be characterized as a young 19th century boy, with limited experience outside the realms of the farm. Despite his undue reasons and his mothers disapproval, Henry joins the cavalry in the concretion Army.
He has playtime fantasies of being a soldier, coming plunk for home with medals from war, and displaying himself as the community war hero. His reasons for joining the war are not for the greater good or for the imposing cause of ending slavery, but rather for his self-image and for others to see him become victorious.
